Home composting
This means throwing into a compost bin rather than a rubbish bin all the things that are biodegradable and will rot down - fruit and vegetable peelings, dead cut flowers, crushed eggshells, used tea bags, paper and cardboard are all things that can be composted.
Why make your own compost?

- More than half of everything we throw away can be composted - so it is DIY recycling at its best!
- It is easy and can be creative and fun.
- Modern compost bins mean making compost is hygienic and there are no nasty smells.
- You’ll be saving money as there is no need to buy compost and you can give your neighbours/local allotments any compost you don’t need.
- You’ll be helping to save our peat bogs, which are home to rare and endangered wildlife, by not buying commercial compost. Much of this contains peat, which has been stripped out of peat bogs.
