Building Bridges is a partner of 12 organisations, led by Community First, who have come together to deliver the Building Better Opportunities Programme across Swindon & Wiltshire, Through our partners, we have access to a wide variety of training from basic Maths, English & IT to start up courses on self-employment.

We have secured further funding to continue our very successful programme which we have been running in the north and south of the county, as well as through the COVID pandemic. The aim is to reach the people furthest from work and help them at least one step closer, for some this might be a training programme but ultimately one step closer could lead to employment.

To be eligible you must be over 18 years old, not currently working, you can be on a zero hour’s contract but must not have had an income in the last 3 months and you must have the legal right to work in the UK.

Our current programme is based at Devizes, but our aim is to work with you in your local area on existing Trust reserves, with a new partnership we have arranged with a local Town Council, as well as continuing our successful on line programme. We provide activities Monday and Friday on line, all materials are sent directly to you and you can join us online to complete them, then there are reserve activities and local walks Tuesday & Wednesday’s in several local areas across Wiltshire.

By completing the online programme and joining in with our outdoor activities you will have the opportunity to develop social skills, we will also discuss your development, prepare personal action plans and consider any training you might require.

We will be working in three local areas so no matter where you live there will be an activity near you, and should you need to use public transport to get to our sessions we will reimburse the fare for you with proof of a ticket.

As part of the online activities we deliver a variety of resilience training including, Goal Setting, CVs, Interview Techniques, Stress Management, Assertiveness, Risk Assessments, Manual Handling etc. within a structured programme.

What is the Building Bridges programme?

The Building Bridges programme is a partnership of organisations which supports people across Swindon and Wiltshire who are facing significant challenges in being able to develop their skills, access education or move towards the world of work. Taking part in the programme is entirely voluntary and all of our advice and support is offered free of charge.

We work with people on a one-to-one basis to help them address the challenges and barriers they are facing and develop their own personalised plan to help them achieve their goals whilst working within a small group.

We understand that there are many different factors which affect whether people feel ready to take the next step forwards - this is why we also offer specialist help and support in a number of areas including developing physical and mental wellbeing, accessing debt and financial advice and help with issues such as transport and childcare.

In March 2022, we were pleased to receive a Wiltshire Life Award for Community Group of the Year.

The aim of the programme is to support people who are furthest from the labour market and experiencing significant barriers and challenges to access the skills development, education and/or experience they need to be able to progress towards, achieve and sustain ongoing employment.

The project has received up to £8.4M of funding from the European Social Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund as part of the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme in England. The Department for Work and Pensions is the Managing Authority for the England European Social Fund programme. Established by the European Union, the European Social Fund helps local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support skills development, employment and job creation, social inclusion and local community regenerations.
