More Amazing Tree Planting at Lydiard Park

Continuing on from the commemorative tree planting in November of the 80 Oaks at Lydiard Park to honour our Second World War heroes, we recently returned to the site to complete the planting of a mixed woodland edge. Our Swindon Project Volunteer & Community Engagement Officer, Joseph, tells us more.

Continuing on from the historic 80 Oaks memorial, the mixed woodland edge that has been planted on the site is made up of a variety of species including Wild Privet, Wild Service Tree, Wayfaring Tree, Field Maple, Hawthorn and more. Each of these trees provide something different, expanding the biodiversity value of the site as a new woodland habitat, which will be a great source food and shelter for wildlife all year round for years to come.

A Monumental Effort

Thanks to the help of our amazing volunteers and a corporate group from Nationwide, this most recent planting session saw us plant over 450 trees. As is often the case, these volunteers battled the rain and the wind to get the trees in the ground, but they exceeded our expectations and managed to finish the whole planting area in one day. They were so efficient that one of team had to go and get more materials!

A huge thank you everyone that volunteered, and the team from Nationwide - you did an amazing job. We wouldn’t have been able to get all those trees planted without your incredible effort.

And though the weather wasn’t always on our side throughout the day, we were gifted with a double rainbow during our lunch break.

More Trees to Take Root

We might be finished with the planting in this area, but our attentions turn next to a new Coppice Orchard at Lydiard Park, meaning we still have many more trees to plant.

Are you interested in getting outdoors and making your mark in your local green space? Come and join us! We have tree planting days booked in for Wednesday 4th and 18th of February, and Wednesday 4th and 18th of March.

All you need to do is register as a volunteer with us and book on to the session that works for you. Whether you are a tree planting pro or it’s your first time we would love for you to join us.
