This year we have received a record number of volunteer award nominations from both staff and volunteers alike. And it is not surprising when we learn of and see so much that has been contributed across the Trust and in the many different departments that have active volunteers.

Out of all the deserving 34 nominations received, it was a truly difficult decision but we have managed to whittle it down to the following incredible individuals shown below, together with their nomination details. Please join us in congratulating them all.

Our 2021 Volunteer Award Winners

  1. Voted by the Volunteers 2021 awarded to Jacqui Cockram -  x 2 nominations: Jacqui is a regular volunteer at Ravensroost Wood, but in addition to this over the last 3 years she has surveyed and catalogued every Wild Service tree in the wood (in excess of 120) giving each a GPS figure. She has done the same with and the transformed the fortunes of the previously ailing Violet Helleborines, providing them with protectors and recording details of flowering etc. She also keeps notes of any fungi she sees on her countless visits. All valuable records for Ravensroost nature reserve.

    Jacqui receives her award
    Well Done Jacqui!

  2. Voted by the Volunteers 2021 awarded to Mike d’Apice – x 2 nominations:  Mike has been the driving force behind the Salisbury Wildlife Group. Coordinating most of the administration for the group and encouraging of new members. Mike has worked tirelessly on the majority of the projects in the Salisbury Area as well as WWT sites. For his enthusiasm, vigour and commitment as coordinator for the Salisbury Wildlife Group and for leading by example.

    Well Done Mike!

  3. Outstanding Individual Volunteer Contribution 2021 awarded to Heather Shepherd – x 4 nominations: She always tries her absolute hardest and is one of the most genuine people. She is dedicated, delightful, a genuinely caring and lovely person. The hard work she puts in for the Café is invaluable to its operation. Heather always has a smile on her face and works so hard to keep everything running smoothly at the cafe- a wonderful person to work with! Heather has turned up almost every weekend since the Kingfisher Cafe started, to help clear tables and wash up. It's not the most glamorous of volunteer opportunities and she has to both work hard and put up with Chef Sam's dubious sense of humour and legendary ability to create mountains of washing up. She does all this and still manages to bake us a perfect Victoria Sponge every week without fail, sometimes two!

    Well Done Heather!

  4. Outstanding Individual Volunteer Contribution 2021 awarded to Leon Smith - I have never seen an individual, who is travelling his own personal journey, become so engrossed, so happy, so passionate and so thrilled to be part of the volunteer group. He enlivens volunteers’ tasks, is always upbeat, engaging, and courteous. He keeps me on my toes, and above all has a wicked turn of phrase. Slasher Smith may not have been volunteering for as long as many others but is one "Bad Boy!" who deserves to be recognised!

    Leon receives his award
    Well Done Leon!

  5. Outstanding Young Volunteer (Under 24) Contribution 2021 awarded to Ollie Davies – x 3 nominations: Ollie helped for a day a week supporting me to deliver Forest School at Broad Chalke School. He also helped plant living willow domes at 2 schools. He was always enthusiastic and happy to get stuck in! He has been enthusiastic, dedicated and reliable and a real pleasure to work with.

    Ollie Davies receives his award
    Well Done Ollie!

  6. Lifetime Achievement 2021 - Awarded to Mr David Amey - Suspect Dave is into his 80s and has routinely led or attended a Salisbury Wildlife Group tasks once a month since it formed in 1997. This is in addition to supporting the RSPB at Garston Wood and coaching the Salisbury Athletics Club's distance runners for decades usually with SWG and SAC on the same day. He's contributed to the environmental and physical health of the area for over half a century - Wow!
