Wild Transitions

Wild Transitions

Wild Transitions is a unique program that provides a bespoke nature-based therapy experience for armed forces service leavers and veterans who are looking to manage their mental health and improve their overall wellbeing. Our 10-week program is designed to help participants reconnect with nature and develop a range of skills, including forest gardening, green woodworking, and woodland management.

Funded by Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and in partnership with the Defence Gardens Scheme (DGS), the Wild Transitions program is run by WWT horticultural therapist Imogen and DGS horticulturalist Rachel. We are dedicated to providing a supportive environment that encourages personal growth, healing, and connection with nature.

Program Overview

The Wild Transitions program is based on the idea that spending time in nature can have a powerful impact on our mental health and wellbeing. Over the course of 10 weeks, participants will engage in a range of nature-based activities and therapy sessions that are tailored to their individual needs and goals.

The program includes:

Forest gardening: Participants will learn how to design and create their own forest garden, a sustainable and low-maintenance way to grow food and other useful plants.

Mindfulness in nature: Participants will learn how to practice mindfulness in nature, using the natural environment as a tool for relaxation and self-awareness.

There may also be opportunities for:

Green woodworking: Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to use hand tools to create their own wooden objects, such as spoons, bowls, and furniture.

Woodland management: Participants will learn about how to manage woodland habitats, including tree identification, coppicing, and wildlife conservation.

Imogen and Rachel, who will provide guidance and support throughout the program.

This course has really helped me feel I have a sense of purpose.
I have been very self-isolating for a long time, and this has helped me reconnect with people. I have learnt to laugh more and not take life so seriously and to relax more.
