Enhancing the River Biss - Upcoming Tree Management and Riverside Improvements

Enhancing the River Biss - Upcoming Tree Management and Riverside Improvements

As part of the Future High Streets funding for Trowbridge, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust will be working to enhance the riverside walk and make enhancements to the public realm near the Town Bridge. Essential riverside works are scheduled to begin at the Town Bridge site this summer.

Starting at the end of July , contractors will be carrying out the carefully planned removal of select trees and shrubs at the Town Bridge site and other points along the river.

Why is this work taking place?

The tree removal is necessary for two reasons:

  1. Several of the affected trees are suffering from Ash Dieback—a severe fungal disease that weakens trees, causing branches to drop and rendering them unsafe in public spaces. Removing them now prevents future hazards along the busy river corridor.

  2. This work clears the necessary space for the final phase of the River Biss improvement scheme, which will transform the Town Bridge and Viewing Platform (area by Stone Mill, Adjacent to The Shires and River Biss) sites into accessible, space for everyone to enjoy.

All works have been reviewed and approved by Wiltshire Council as part of the formal planning process (Planning Reference: PL/2024/03220) and (Planning Reference: : PL/2024/03221  for the viewing platform)

Temporary Footpath Closures

To ensure public safety while the heavy tree works are underway, the riverside footpath at Town Bridge will be temporarily closed from July 27th to July 31st. Pedestrians will need to walk along Stallard Street.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation during these few days.

What happens next?

Following the tree removal, we anticipate the construction of the new viewing platforms and public realm improvements to begin on-site in late summer/early autumn.
