30 Days Wild: Week 3 - Become a Wildlife Expert

Hello again, fellow nature lovers, nice to see you back with us! We're over halfway through our wild June journey together, and this week is all about learning and expanding our understanding of the fascinating creatures that share our world. We've got a fantastic line-up of activities to help you become a local wildlife expert.

Taking the time to learn about the plants and animals around us not only deepens our appreciation for nature but also empowers us to protect it more effectively. So, get ready to put on your detective hats, grab your notebooks, and let's learn about Wiltshire's wildlife!

Here’s what's planned for Week 3:

16 June: Become a wildlife detective and download a spotter guide

Kick off this week’s challenges by equipping yourself with a handy spotter guide. We have excellent resources available on the website, focusing on local birds, wildflowers, insects, or mammals. Go to our Coombe Bisset Down reserve page where we have some wonderful resources which could be used anywhere. Head outdoors to see what you can find - it's like a treasure hunt in nature!

17 June: Join a Wildlife Watch Group

Looking for a fantastic way for primary-aged children to connect with nature? Wildlife Watch Groups offer exciting opportunities for young people and their families to explore the outdoors, participate in fun activities, and discover the wonders of the natural world right here in Wiltshire. With nine groups located throughout Wiltshire, there's sure to be one near you!

Activities vary from pond dipping and bug hunting (perfect for this week's theme!) to building bird feeders and creating nature-inspired art. It's a brilliant way for kids to make new friends, learn new skills, and develop a lifelong love of wildlife. All groups are run by dedicated volunteers. Find out more about each of our groups - it's a wonderful way to learn together.

18 June: Dive into discovery - go pond dipping

Take a look at the hidden world beneath the surface... find a safe and accessible pond for some pond dipping. No pond in your garden?  Lower Moor Farm has a pond dipping platform. With a net and a tray, gently scoop up some water and see what incredible creatures you can find.

You might find insect larvae like dragonfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae, and mayfly larvae. Additionally, you could discover tadpoles, newts, water beetles, and various other invertebrates such as pond skaters, backswimmers, and waterlice. It's a hands-on way to learn about aquatic ecosystems and the fascinating life they support. Remember to return everything carefully to the pond afterwards.

19 June: Learn a new skill – volunteer with us and contribute to conservation work

Combine your passion for nature with the opportunity to learn something new by volunteering with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust or another local conservation organisation. Many volunteering roles involve training and skill development, whether it's habitat management, species identification, or leading guided walks. It's a rewarding way to contribute and expand your knowledge; visit our webpage to see our current opportunities.

20 June: Immerse yourself in nature - come to an event

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust hosts a variety of engaging events throughout the year, from guided walks and talks to workshops and family activities.  Attending an event is a fantastic way to learn from experts, meet fellow nature enthusiasts, and experience wildlife in a new way. Check out what's coming up on events page.

22 June: Embark on a mini safari - do on a bug hunt!

You don't need to travel far to encounter wildlife. All around us are small but mighty bugs waiting to be discovered. Get down low and go on a bug hunt in your garden, a local park, or a woodland area. Look under logs, on leaves, and in the soil to discover the amazing diversity of insects and other invertebrates. A magnifying glass can reveal a whole new world!

21 June: Curl up with nature - read a wildlife book

Expand your knowledge from the comfort of your own home by diving into a good book about nature. We love The Adventure’s of Scout series for children, Is a River Alive by Robert MacFarlane and The Overstory by Richard Powers. Visit your local library or bookshop and discover the wonders of the natural world through literature.

This week is all about fueling your curiosity and deepening your understanding of the wildlife that surrounds us in Wiltshire. We encourage you to get involved, explore, and learn something new every day.

Don't forget to share your discoveries with us using #30DaysWild and tagging Wiltshire Wildlife Trust on social media – we'd love to see what you're learning. Let's become true champions for Wiltshire's wildlife!
