Papier Maché Bugs What to do: Tear old newspapers into narrow strips of about 3cm wide and approximately 12cm long (depending on the dimensions of the balloon). Either soak these in a stiff solution of wallpaper paste and water as for traditional papier maché, or if preferred, paint the wallpaper paste solution onto the newspaper strips. Blow up a balloon and cover with four layers of pasted soaked newspaper strips. Leave it until it is completely dry. This will take at least 24 hours. Once it is dry, cut the papered balloon carefully in half, add some pipe-cleaner legs and paint your new bug in bright colours. You will get two bug shapes from each balloon, and can use all sorts and shapes of balloon to make a tribe of different bugs! Follow up: This activity could lead into discussions of camouflage and display.
