Love Your Local Nature Reserve - Bay Meadows
Just four years ago, the Marlborough community came together to save something extraordinary. Donations from hundreds of local supporters helped Wiltshire Wildlife Trust purchase Bay Meadows Nature Reserve and secure it for wildlife, for people, and for future generations. Today, as spring approaches, we’re inviting you to fall in love with Bay Meadows all over again.
A Haven Worth Protecting
Nestled between Ogbourne Maizey and Marlborough, Bay Meadows forms a vital green corridor in the heart of the landscape. The reserve is a lifeline for some of our most threatened species, thanks to a stretch of the River Og—a globally rare chalk stream—which flows through this precious water meadow. Otters slip silently along the riverbanks. Kingfishers flash over clear pools. Wild brown trout shelter in gravel beds. And hidden in the reeds, one of Wiltshire’s last remaining populations of water voles find refuge—an animal that has disappeared from many counties entirely.
Thanks to your support, Bay Meadows is not just surviving but beginning to flourish.
Four Years of Progress — Made Possible by You
Securing the land was only the beginning. Your generosity has enabled us to begin transforming Bay Meadows into a thriving wetland habitat once again. We’ve been restoring the floodplain meadow to support a greater range of flowering plants and pollinators, improving conditions for water voles and trout, and planning for a richer, more wildlife-friendly future.
Just as importantly, Bay Meadows is becoming a place for the whole community. Over the coming months and years, it will host guided walks, activities for families, volunteering sessions, and a dedicated nature area to allow space for connecting with the natural world. Find out more here.
Now We’re Asking You to Be Part of the Next Chapter
This month, reconnect with the reserve you helped save, celebrate its progress, and support the work still to be done.
Our fundraising target is £3,000, and your support will help us to:
- Deliver vital habitat restoration on the chalk stream and meadows
- Support ongoing engagement activities for your community
- Plan regular volunteer days so the community can help us care for Bay Meadows
The story of Bay Meadows is one of nature thriving and community action. With your help, we can continue restoring habitats, inspiring young naturalists, supporting local wildlife, and protecting this rare chalk-stream landscape long into the future.
Please join us in loving your local nature reserve—today, tomorrow, and for years to come.
